Jan Mankes Exhihibtion, Best of Show
A contribution to a group exhibition inspired by the Dutch Artist Jan Mankes (1889-1920). He produced around 200 paintings, 100 drawings and 50 prints before dying of tuberculosis at the age of 30. His restrained, detailed work ranged from self-portraits to landscapes and studies of birds and animals. Jan had a maecenas who occasionally sent him dead birds for study and paintings! I wouldn’t mind having a maecenas like that. (Or any maecenas for that matter). The Apus Apus I’m holding and which ended up being the subject of my piece was found dead by Jacqueline and after residing in our fridge for I guess 1,5 years recently professionally prepped by friend and fellow illustrator Esther Dijkstra.
